Why You Should Become a Tutor

At SiSTEM, we want your tutoring experience to be as rewarding as possible! We aim to create a seamless process for our tutors to join and hopefully become longstanding members of our team. We offer a variety of tutoring services that cater to student and tutor needs, as well as tools to better support our tutors in their efforts. Some of these resources include in-person or virtual tutoring options, choosing your hours, a 24/7 support line, and providing curriculum resources. Flexibility and accommodation are extremely important to us. As we know our tutors have busy schedules.

Students and tutors all have full, engaging lives, and we believe tutoring sessions should enrich their day. As a result, we allow tutors autonomy in deciding where sessions best fit into their day. Tutors are free to work between 1-40 hours per week and may host a session before school, during school, after school, or on weekends. It all depends on when they want to work and what they negotiate with their students. SiSTEM also offers virtual or in-person tutoring to provide more accessible tutoring options. We understand that not all students or tutors have a reliable or inexpensive mode of transportation and that virtual tutoring might be best for them. On the flip side, we know that some students need in-person instruction for better understanding and some tutors prefer the in-person mode of instruction.

SiSTEM also aims to take some of the hard work off of tutors’ plates. Building a curriculum is difficult, even if you might already have practice as a full-time teacher. As such, we do come up with the curriculum for each subject – tutors are always welcome to use resources they find helpful, though! Additionally, we will find the students for you. No need to take up even more time in your busy schedule marketing yourself; we have lots of students who are awaiting your support who we can easily pair you with. Both of these supports will provide you with more time to strengthen your tutoring abilities and better reap the rewards of tutoring.

Professional Development

Tutoring is a great way to buff up your resume and practice your craft. Whether your background is in math, science, English, computer science, or a second language, tutoring adds an extra level of professionalism to your resume – if you can teach others, you probably have a fundamental understanding of your specialization. Employers recognize this, making you an even more likely candidate for future job opportunities. Particularly for second languages, the extra practice is always good, too!

Additionally, working with students will likely facilitate conversations with their teachers and professors. This can help build your network and establish meaningful connections with people in the education industry. Whether it’s a future job opportunity or advice to make you a better educator, these are networking opportunities you won’t want to pass up on.

Helping Students

Working with students can be very gratifying. Watching them succeed and grow, no matter their age is wonderful to see. As a tutor, you have the opportunity to inspire confidence and help students become even stronger in the academic arena. Empowering children and youth through knowledge can be one of the most rewarding experiences – students are next in line to make our world a better place and you can give them the tools to do it.

We have options for one on one tutoring for students who need focused attention and a little more support (including homeschooling help). Campus immersion services for teachers and parents who feel their students are playing catch-up after the pandemic. Test prep tutoring for students who need a little extra help ahead of an exam or for students with test anxiety. Finally, supporting our local community with tutoring assistance through partnerships with local businesses, companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. All of these opportunities will enhance the lives of those receiving the instruction and the tutors who are providing the information.

Tutor Characteristics and Qualifications

If you’re organized self-starter, enjoy working with people, and have a fundamental understanding of one or more of the subjects we offer, you would make a great SiSTEM tutor! We have so many students looking for assistance, and as a result, we are continuously looking to add new members to our tutoring team. Currently, all of our in-person tutors are located in the Houston, Dallas, and Austin area, but we are hiring virtual tutors across the United States! Unfortunately, we are not looking to hire tutors outside the USA; at this time.

There are a few things we require each prospective tutor to have completed before we can officially put them on our list of tutors. You must complete a background check and a vetting session by one of our SiSTEM employees, and you must be:

  • A college student with at least 60 teaching hours
  • A college graduate
  • A certified or retired teacher, or
  • An experienced tutor or teacher with a minimum of two years of experience

As a tutoring agency, we take a holistic approach to the tutoring experience. SiSTEM offers a variety of options for students and tutors to work within their needs and schedules. We provide tutors with the resources they need and encourage them to get creative with the tools they use to help students. We hope they can use their tutoring experience with us to build new connections and find the rewards that come with empowering students with knowledge. If you’re interested in becoming a tutor, there are a few steps we’ll have you complete:

  1. Apply to become a tutor
  2. Attend a phone interview
  3. We complete a reference and background check
  4. You’re hired!

We hope you will consider applying – we would love to have you join our team! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
