How to Master Writing Assignments

Some of us are more mathematically inclined than others, and that's okay! For students who struggle with English and Language Arts, writing assignments can be a nightmare. When a teacher announces a new paper or writing submission to be due, and your stomach ties up in knots, it might be time to seek help from a tutor - which is where we come in.

Don’t Underestimate the Brainstorming Process!

If you dive directly into writing without first mapping out your initial plan, this can continue to writer’s block and make the process of completing your assignment more difficult. Do your due diligence and set yourself up for success prior to putting words down on the page. You can work with your tutor to map out the thesis, beginning, middle, and end of your paper. This way, you will have more direction going into the assignment as the bones are already laid out for you!

Be Sure to Cite Your Sources Correctly

Citing your sources is a non-negotiable when it comes to mastering writing assignments. If you do not properly cite where you got your information from, this can lead to trouble when it comes to academic integrity and originality of your work (no thanks!) Working with a tutor can help you avoid missing out on essential steps like properly citing your sources in the correct format. These formalities might seem tedious, but they are crucial when it comes to stepping up your writing game.

Use Words to Paint Pictures

Using words to help you paint pictures is a great way to keep your reader entranced - even if you are not writing a creative story! Work with your tutor to come up with a word bank of terms to use throughout your paper. Not only will this help make your writing more interesting, but it can boost your vocabulary, too.

Be Certain That You Understand the Assignment

If you have ever received an assignment and not known what the success criteria were for achieving a high-scoring grade, you are not alone. Writing assignments can be complex, especially if they are given to students in multiple parts. Asking your classroom teacher for clarification isn't always easy, especially if you do not yet have a close relationship with them. Tutoring can help you better understand the assignment at hand so you know what is required for you to be successful.

Edit & Proofread More Than Once

Looking over your final paper one-time prior to submitting won't cut it! If you want to start mastering writing assignments, it's time to up your proofreading game. Try reading your paper aloud, using different colored pens to underline assignment essentials, and compare your final piece to the original assignment rubric. Your tutor can work alongside you to help coach you in crafting the perfect proofreading routine that can be used for any assignment!
