3 Reasons Why Algebra is Important

#1: Understanding basic Algebra is necessary for upper-level math courses such as Geometry, Statistics, and Calculus

Algebra is a foundational mathematics course that other subjects build upon. If you are not sure how to add, multiply and subtract using PEMDAS, you might struggle a lot with Geometry. If you do not understand the basics of graphing, you might struggle with Calculus. To be successful in subsequent math courses, students must have a good grasp of Algebra!

If there is an ability, have your student start Algebra or Pre-Algebra in the 8th grade. That will set them up for success in their future high school math courses and beyond!

#2: Algebra might be needed in your career of choice

If I could get paid $1.00 for every time a student said, "Ms. Ubaru, I do not think I will ever need to use Algebra in my life", I would be a millionaire!

Algebra is all around us. From calculating how the sale price of a shirt that is currently 25% off, to figuring out how many more hours you need to work at your job to purchase those new shoes you've been wanting. Not only that, if you plan to pursue careers in Medicine, Engineering, Technology or even teaching Math, you will need to know Algebra. If you plan to pursue medicine, as a pharmacist, you will need to know how to accurately calculate the dosage for a patient's medication. A civil engineer has to make sure that they measure and calculate the width of the river to make sure the bridge they plan to build fits right over it. There are many more examples, but these are just a few to get you excited about Algebra!

#3: Algebra is fun!

That's right, you heard it right. Algebra REALLY is fun! Why? Because the topics you learn can be applied to everyday life. When you are learning about linear functions and their graphs, you can better understand things like why a car travels miles per hour; or why your favorite basketball player is consistently scoring 30+ points per game! Most of all, Algebra is fun when you know what you are doing and when you are doing it well.
